No one knows when it began, but the world was split in two. In the Upper City, people live beneath the sun. They have vast land, warmth, and the freedom to breathe. In the Lower City, people are buried in a cramped, lightless underground. They never see the sky. Even breathing can be fatal. In a dim alley, a ragged old man—half-mad—tilts back a bottle of cheap liquor. He laughs, wild and hoarse, then throws his head back and roars: “Honorable lords of the Upper City! Tell me— In your eyes… do we of the Lower City even count as human?”
