Chapter 28: The Quartermaster's Mind Is Blown — How Does That Even Work?

"What are you doing heading out this late at night?"

After dinner, Wang Yong and Chen Erhu followed Lin Hui to the entrance of the library.

Lin Hui smiled and said, "I'm going to the library to read up on a few things and look some stuff up."

Wang Yong was completely speechless. "Holy crap — last-minute cramming? You looked so calm earlier, I thought you already knew everything. Turns out you're learning on the fly?"

"We're done for!" Chen Erhu groaned, his face scrunched up. "We walked right into this one ourselves!"

Lin Hui flashed an okay sign. "Relax, it's not a big deal. I'm a genius, remember?"

With that, he walked straight into the library.

Wang Yong shook his head. "We're finished. Hui Bro is even fooling himself now — does he really think he can deliver piglets just by skimming a few books? If it were that easy, everyone would be a vet."

Chen Erhu was starting to panic too. "So what do we do tomorrow? If something goes wrong and we lose both the sow and the litter, we're in serious trouble."

Wang Yong let out a long sigh. "Nothing we can do. Might as well try a long shot."

"Let's just hope he finds something useful in those books. Otherwise, we'd better brace ourselves for total humiliation tomorrow."

Meanwhile, the moment Lin Hui stepped into the library, he immediately tracked down the relevant books.

"Farrowing and Prenatal Care for Sows," "Three Thousand Questions on Scientific Pig Farming," "The Complete Guide to Pig Raising"…

"These are the ones!"

Lin Hui's eyes lit up as he rapidly flipped through the pages.

Thanks to the System, everything he read was instantly committed to memory.

A vast flood of knowledge about pig farming poured into his mind like a river.

Ding — Pig Farming Skill +1!

Early the next morning.

Lin Hui had just returned from the library when Wang Yong and Chen Erhu immediately rushed over to him.

The two of them had been so anxious they'd barely slept all night — their eyes were as dark as a panda's.

"Hui Bro, how'd it go?"

Chen Erhu asked urgently, "Did you learn anything useful?"

Wang Yong smacked him on the head. "What are you expecting? What could anyone learn in one night? Hui Bro, maybe we should just go apologize to the Quartermaster and the others. If we butt heads with them, we're the ones who'll come out worse."

Lin Hui said with full confidence, "Alright, stop fussing. Just do what I say."

The two exchanged a glance, both looking deeply skeptical.

But at this point, they had no choice but to put their faith in Lin Hui.

Soon, the three of them arrived at the pig pens.

Inside, the Quartermaster was already waiting with a group of veteran soldiers.

The moment Lin Hui arrived, Old Ma pulled him aside. "Lin Hui, you actually showed up?"

"Sergeant Ma, we agreed yesterday — today's my responsibility."

"Don't be ridiculous!"

Old Ma lowered his voice. "Delivering piglets is no joke. You stay right here and don't move. I'll go have a word with the Quartermaster and get you off the hook — we'll just pretend this whole thing never happened."

Lin Hui felt a warm glow in his chest.

He'd been at the unit for a while now, and Old Ma was the first veteran who had genuinely looked out for him.

Still, after a full night of intensive studying, he was completely confident he could handle the farrowing. Otherwise, he wouldn't have come back at all.

"Sergeant Ma!" Lin Hui said with a straight face. "Actually, I have quite a bit of experience with livestock operations. Seriously — my dad's a pig slaughterer!"

Far away in his office at the command headquarters, Lin Guangyao suddenly sneezed.

If he ever found out that Lin Hui had told people that he — a full-ranking general — was a pig slaughterer, he'd probably track the boy down across a thousand miles just to beat him senseless.

"Really?" Old Ma looked puzzled.

"Of course it's true!" Lin Hui smiled with an expression of complete sincerity. "My family raises pigs and slaughters them — my dad handles the whole operation from start to finish. He's excellent at it, and I've been learning from him since I was little!"

Lin Guangyao sneezed several times in a row. "What's going on today? Who keeps talking about me?"

Old Ma furrowed his brow slightly. Just then, the Quartermaster called out, "Lin Hui, are you coming or not? We can wait, but the sow can't — she's about to burst!"

"Coming! Be right there!" Lin Hui flashed Old Ma a grin and strode over.

Old Ma tried to stop him but couldn't, and could only sigh inwardly.

He had no idea whether the kid was telling the truth or not.

He'd watch for now — if things went south, he'd step in immediately.

Just then, he saw Lin Hui pull an MP3 player out of his pocket and start playing music.

"What are you doing?"

"Sergeant Ma, you wouldn't understand. My dad taught me this — playing music for the sow helps ease her prenatal anxiety."

Old Ma was at a loss for words. "Is your dad a pig slaughterer or a psychologist?"

Lin Hui chuckled. "He used to be a psychologist. Then he switched to slaughtering pigs."

Soothing music drifted through the air, and the sow about to give birth began to calm down.

Several of the veteran soldiers saw Lin Hui playing music for the pig and burst out laughing. "Ha! I've heard of playing music to a cow, but never to a pig!"

"What do you lot know!"

Lin Hui rolled his eyes and began giving the sow a Massage with practiced, professional movements.

Fan Ming's eye twitched. "Lin Hui, if you really don't know what you're doing, get out of there now. Don't stress the pig out so much she refuses to give birth!"

"Quartermaster, I'm giving the pig a prenatal relaxation Massage. This technique is top-notch — guaranteed to feel great. If you don't believe me, I can give you one when I'm done."

Lin Hui nearly made Fan Ming spit blood in fury.

You son of a— are you calling me a pig?

Besides, I'm a male! A male!

The Massage finished quickly, and Lin Hui picked up the MP3 player and switched to a new song.

"The wind howls, the horses whinny, the Yellow River roars, the Yellow River roars…"

The moment the rousing music rang out, the old sow's ears perked up and she grew visibly energized.

Drawing on his vast store of professional knowledge, Lin Hui could tell at a glance that the sow in front of him was about to begin labor.

The System's learning ability had already made him a seasoned expert.

Farrowing was child's play to him now.

One by one, the piglets were gently placed by his hands onto the dry straw.

Old Ma watched Lin Hui's practiced movements with his heart in his throat. "Careful, careful — be careful! Don't make any mistakes!"

"Don't worry, Sergeant Ma. I'm always gentle with pigs."

Lin Hui moved quickly, but every motion was exceptionally delicate.

There was absolutely no risk of injuring the fragile newborn piglets.

In just a third of the time it would normally take, Lin Hui successfully delivered the litters from all eight sows in the pen.

Every single piglet was lively and bouncing around — they all looked perfectly healthy.

Lin Hui let out a breath. "Sergeant Ma — a close call, but mission accomplished!"

Old Ma thumped him on the chest. "You little rascal — you scared me half to death! And you actually pulled it off!"

Wang Yong came running over, bursting with excitement. "Hui Bro, that was awesome!"

Chen Erhu's eyes were sparkling. "Can you teach me that technique? My second uncle back home has a whole bunch of sows. When I get back, I'm gonna show off big time."

"No problem — easy as pie." Lin Hui looked completely relaxed.

He walked up to Fan Ming and snapped a salute. "Quartermaster, task completed successfully — awaiting further instructions!"

Fan Ming stood there with his jaw on the floor.

After a long moment, he finally came back to his senses. "Lin Hui, I've been in logistics for years, and I have never once seen anyone deliver piglets using methods like that. You've genuinely opened my eyes today!"

"Oh, it's nothing, really."

Lin Hui waved a hand dismissively. "My dad doesn't just slaughter pigs — he raises them too. Farrowing is as natural to me as eating and sleeping."

Achoo!

Lin Guangyao sneezed hard again. "What on earth is going on today?"
